It’s funny how sometimes we see or hear just the right words at just the right moment…
As you may have read in my previous post, I’m on a mission to get my house clean and organized (and hopefully somehow cuter in the process.) I was inspired and decided to follow The Household Organization Diet.
I also decided that my house needed a quick top to bottom cleaning before I could begin organizing and I found some great tips from CleanAndScentsible. Especially for the kitchen area and appliances.
Looking at my sink, disposal and microwave, I thought those were good places to start as I’d sort of neglected to clean them as well as I should in the past few months. Anyway, there was this fabulous idea to use a half cup of water and the juice of one lemon in the microwave for 5-10 minutes and then wipe down the whole inside easily. You can use ice and vinegar to sharpen and clean the blades of your garbage disposal and then throw the lemon rind down there to make it smell all fresh and clean.
Okay, so I got my microwave safe bowl and my lemon water ready and put it into the microwave for 10 minutes, figuring it would give it extra deep steam cleansing power. After about 8 minutes, I started to smell something a little strange. Something I don’t think I’ve ever smelled before and I knew immediately that I had to stop the microwave. But it was too late. All the liquid had evaporated and was a black smoking mess in the bottom of the bowl. That smell was the burning lemon juice!
I carefully removed the bowl (using oven mitts) and set it carefully in the sink, where it exploded magnificently!
So, 10 minutes may have been a tad too long for the lemon water in the microwave trick. Next time I will definitely only do five minutes. Or less.
On the plus side, our microwave is now sparkling clean!
And the slight scent of eau de burnt lemon isn’t so bad.
