10 Personal Color Myths Busted

Let me just say that I know that there is a lot of confusion surrounding personal color analysis.

This is because there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to color.

There are some general guidelines, but they are exactly what they sound like. Generic. And no one is (or wants to be) generic.

It’s true that some of these guidelines can be helpful in guiding you to discover your personal best colors.

But more often than not, I see a lot of people who are confused because they don’t “fit” in any of these neat little boxes quite so perfectly.

10 color myths busted

I want to clear up some common color myths:

1. To be a Clear/Bright you have to have blue or green eyes.

FALSE. People of all nationalities, even people of color can be Clear/Bright!

2. People of color must be Deeps.

FALSE. Oprah Winfrey is a Bright! Whoopi Goldberg is a Deep.

3. Autumns can’t have blonde hair.

FALSE. A large majority of Soft Autumns are blonde!

4. Blondes can’t be Winters.

FALSE. Many beautiful platinum blondes are in fact, Winters!

5. If you have freckles, you must be warm toned.

FALSE. Freckles are absolutely not an indicator of a warm skin tone.

6. All Springs and Autumns must only wear gold.

FALSE. Some Springs and Autumns look or feel fantastic wearing silver!

7. All Summers and Winters must only wear silver.

FALSE. Some Summers and Winters look or feel fantastic wearing gold!

8. Only Winters should wear black.

FALSE. While it is true that black is not a flattering color on everyone, there are people who look great in it that aren’t Winters.

9. All Winters should wear black.

FALSE. It is generally true that black is a Winter color, however, it is not necessarily a wonderful color on every Winter person.

10. You should be able to wear ALL of the colors in your seasonal palette.

FALSE. Sometimes there might be a few that aren’t quite right and sometimes you’ll even borrow a few colors from other seasons that look amazing on you. Most of the time, you will be able to wear all the colors within your season, but nothing is written in stone.

And, on top of all that, every company out there has a different set of colors for each season. There is no governing body to say which is right or wrong. Color is ALWAYS subjective. We can’t even scientifically prove that you and I both see red as the same color as each other.

Here’s what I hope you’ll take away from all of this.

It’s the overall look that matters. Any hair, eye, and skin color combination can be found in all the seasons or tonal directions.

  • People with light hair can be any season.
  • People with dark hair can be any season.
  • People with dark eyes can be any season.
  • People with light eyes can be any season.
  • People with any skin color can be any season.

You can’t follow a set of rules where real human beings are concerned.

I take each of my color client’s unique, individual coloring into consideration when determining what their seasonal or tonal direction is so that I can help them to find their very best colors. It is so important to know that each person sees color differently and has their own relationship with colors. Color can make us FEEL. And I want to make sure that the feelings your colors bring to you are happy ones.
